Ryzen 5 3600 Running Too Hot?
After my first year of owning a Ryzen 5 3600 system and CPU I came to realise my 3600 was running super hot. I mean 95C while gaming hot. This wasn’t normally an issue in the colder months of the year. But during the warmer months it became very noticeable. The system pumped hot air due to the CPU running @ peak 85-95C and 50-58C in idle consistently. Which was becoming an issue. So much so that I even thought about reducing my PC use to maintain my room temperature.
Now no other CPU that I previously had whether Intel or AMD ever ran this hot. But through some research it seems this is quite normal for the range and something they’ve been built to handle. However, there is the common consensus that over time high heat will reduce the longevity of the CPU and adjacent hardware, not mention the extra heat it produces in your environment.
So Here’s What You Need..
The reality is that the stock wraith cooler really isn’t enough for someone using a Ryzen 5 3600 system on a regular bases to play games, stream Twitch and movies. Often done simultaneously. If the system is doing more mundane activities and on a less regular bases, then it’s not an issue.
However, if you are working your system and pushing it to perform then an aftermarket CPU cooler is the recommended low-cost solution here. Fortunately it’s a problem that’s easy to fix with $40-60. Anything in the mid range should do the trick. Some researched recommendations being:
– Be quiet! Pure Rock 2
– Arctic Freezer A13
– Arctic Freezer 34
– Deepcool Gammaxx GTE V2 Black
– Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
These are relatively simple to install and excellent value for money. I purchased the Be quiet! Pure Rock 2. And these are the results that I was able to get:
Original:
55-60C Idle
89-95C Gaming
Now:
35-45 Idle
65-72 Gaming
44-50 Streaming Twitch
That’s a huge change! The game I tested it with was New World on max graphics using the RTX 2060. Which is currently well known to be a demanding game that will push the system. Another unexpected, but pleasant outcome was better FPS. I noticed a good 10-15% increase in FPS in demanding locations. Which means that my system was being mildly throttled by the over-heating CPU at its original temperature and range.
